A researcher at Dundee University has published an article in a medical diary arguing that people in debt must be able to get payments for donating organs.
Sue Rabbitt Roff argued that paying for organs like kidneys really should be allowed to encourage more living donors and may also be a good way of helping individuals with their own debt problems.
She advises that donors really should be paid £28,000 which may be the average wage in the UK, nevertheless the British Medical Association (BMA) says it would not support cash being paid for organs. The Human Tissue Act does make payment for internal organs illegal and makes it an offence to try to sell a body organ.
Dr Tony Callard from the BMA’s ethics committee said: “Organ donation should be altruistic and based on clinical need. Living kidney donation carries a small but significant health risk.
“Introducing payment could lead to donors feeling compelled to take these risks, contrary to their better judgement, because of their financial situation.”
